2026 Spring sports roundup

Check out the success of district athletes and teams during this spring’s season of Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) state tournaments! 

Note: Maple Grove Senior High School is noted as MGSH, Osseo Senior High School as OSH and Park Center Senior High School as PCSH. District students in adapted sports are playing under the name Osseo Orioles this season, though athletes come from all district high schools.

Adapted softball (CI)  

The Osseo Orioles team, comprised of athletes from all district high schools, were consolation champs in the cognitively impaired adapted softball (CI) state tournament, which took place May 15 and 16 at Wayzata High School. The team moved into the consolation bracket after losing to the Dakota United Hawks in the first round of tournament play, but they then defeated both the South Suburban Jets and the South Washington County Thunderbolts the following day to clinch the consolation win. 

Adapted softball (PI)

The Osseo Orioles team walked away with a second place finish for the physically impaired (PI) adapted softball state tournament May 15 and 16 at Wayzata High School. The team defeated the Robbinsdale/Hopkins/West team in the quarterfinals round, then the Anoka-Hennepin Mustangs the following day before facing off against the South Suburban Flyers in the championship game. The close game ended with a 2-3 finish. 

Badminton

PCSH’s badminton team took part in the state tournament May 11-16, with participants including senior Hawa Kontoe and sophomore Melody Lor in singles. Doubles teams included Angela Yang/Suzan Lee Solima and Zalou Vang/Audrey Xiong. This is PCSH’s second season with a badminton team. 

Boys golf 

The MGSH boys golf team placed second in the Section 5AAA meet May 27 and 28, and two team members advanced to the state tournament June 9-10 at Bunker Hills Golf Course. Senior Zach Johnson and sophomore Will Godin each finished in 16th place at state, with matching two-day scores of 146.

Girls golf

After taking first place by an impressive 65 shots over the second place finishers at the Section 5AAA meet May 27 and 28, the MGSH girls golf team took second place at the AAA state tournament June 9-10. Junior Payton Anderson led the way for the Crimson at state with a seventh place finish and score of 148. Senior Abby Stendahl and junior Annika Hendrickson tied for 20th with scores of 156. 

Boys track and field

Notable finishes at the AAA state meet include:

• 100 meter dash: OSH senior Makhi Clerk placed fifth and MGSH senior Jon Lunde placed ninth
• 800 meter run: OSH senior Asad Farah placed eighth
• 1600 meter run: MGSH junior Lucas Capistrant placed eighth
• 110 meter hurdles: OSH senior Joshua Kolaru placed fourth
• 300 meter hurdles: OSH senior Joshua Kolaru placed fifth and MGSH senior Keynan Allee placed seventh
• 4x100 meter relay: The MGSH relay team of Drake Wegscheid, Cole Kalkwarf, Benjamin Hager and Jon Lunde placed sixth
• 4x800 meter relay: The OSH team of Raleigh Rundquist, Eli Berg, Ben Sanvik and Asad Farah placed 13th
• High jump: PCSH sophomore Tony Brown placed fourth
• Long jump: OSH junior Michael Criswell placed 19th

Girls track and field June 4-6

Two district relay teams walked away as state champions at the girls AAA state track and field meet June 4-6. And, to make the victories even sweeter, both first place finishes also marked new all-time state records in girls track and field. The MGSH 4x400 meter relay team of Aubrey Steel, Rebecca Lang, Mackenzie Laux and Lillian Waite are back-to-back state champions, and the OSH team of Frankmico Siaway, Payton Young, Daysetta Zulu and Esther Obaye are state champions in the 4x100 meter relay race. 

Other notable finishes include: 

• 100 meter dash: Two OSH seniors placed: Payton Young in eighth and Esther Obaye in ninth
• 200 meter dash: OSH senior Obaye placed fifth
• 400 meter dash: MGSH senior Lillian Waite placed eighth
• 800 meter run: Two MGSH juniors placed: Mackenzie Laux in fifth and Rebecca Lang placed eighth
• 100 meter hurdles: PCSH senior Claire Nelson placed sixth
• 300 meter hurdles: MGSH senior Aubrey Steel placed sixth
• 4x100 meter relay: The PCSH team of Kyra Spencer, Mauri Passley, Shamere Chatman and Crystal Nehwah placed fifth
• 4x200 meter relay: The MGSH team of Nora Shelton, Eva Williams, Sophia Waite and Lillian Waite placed fourth
• 4x800 meter relay: The MGSH team of April Watson, Dakota Laux, Mackenzie Laux and Rebecca Lang placed fourth
• Triple jump: PCSH senior Lyric Singleton placed 13th
