Brooklyn Middle STEAM School hosts College and Career Day

On Jan. 14, Brooklyn Middle STEAM School (BMS) welcomed over 40 community members into the building as guest speakers for their annual College and Career Day. The school’s career fair is an all-school event.
For the first half of the day, students learned about different career pathways from a variety of career professionals. The discussions also featured hands-on activities and online games with students.
The presenters’ careers spanned a wide range, including construction trades, a financial planner, police officers, librarians, a law student, a nurse, a personal trainer, chefs and different business roles such as graphic design, human resources and marketing, among others.
“Most of the people who presented were former students, families, or staff at our school or in our school district,” said Shannon Cominsar, STEAM Curriculum Coordinator at the school. “Some were related to staff. It was very much a community celebrated event and very interactive too, where students had to solve case studies based on that career.”
The afternoon involved writing thank you cards to presenters, taking a college major and career inventory survey, virtually exploring various college campuses and researching careers of choice.
“It was a powerful day of learning, curiosity and future dreaming at BMS,” Comisar added.
