In honor of National Poetry Month, students in Mrs. Xiong's class at Fernbrook Elementary School explored a variety of poetry styles, including free verse, rhyming, acrostic, cinquain and haiku. Students had the opportunity to write about their passions, everyday experiences, loved ones and friendships while discovering how poetry can be used as a meaningful form of self-expression.

As part of this work, students went through the full writing process and collaborated to create a class poetry book. Each student selected one poem to share during a virtual Author Celebration event with families and school staff. The celebration gave students an opportunity to build confidence, practice presentation skills and take pride in their writing.

In addition, April 15 marked National American Sign Language (ASL) Day. Students participated in a mini unit focused on the deaf and hard of hearing community and learned songs using ASL, which they performed during the virtual celebration.

“The month-long celebration of poetry and ASL provided students with meaningful opportunities to express themselves creatively, connect with others and celebrate diverse forms of communication,” said Xiong. “Through this experience, students explored the importance of inclusion and learning about different communities.”
