Fernbrook students learn about the life cycle of chickens through Kidstop program

Over the past two weeks at Fernbrook Elementary School, students in Community Education’s Kidstop before- and after-school age care program have had a unique hands-on learning experience about the life cycle of chickens.

Kidstop site supervisor Jordan Robertson introduced the experience to the students through a connection with a local farmer.

During the first week, students took turns visiting the chicken egg incubator and observing changes during the hatching process. Each day, Robertson shared the current stage of the life cycle with students.

Last week, over the course of a few days, students watched as a single egg began to hatch, eventually leading to eight chicks completing the process. The chicks were then moved to a brooder pen to keep them safe while giving students a chance to view the baby chicks up close.

Students will have a few more days to observe the chicks before they are returned to the farmer who provided the eggs.
