Sixth grade students from North View Middle School (NVMS) had the opportunity to make a lasting mark on their school community April 15 with the planting of 63 trees on school grounds.

The planting day was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, which seeks to combat urban heat island effect by providing shade and cooling in spaces that will benefit people.

“We’re hopeful these trees will provide some extra pieces of shade in this big sunny space for students to use when they are outside doing activities and enjoying the school area,” said Katie Edmond of Great River Greening, the organization that facilitated the planting.

Great River Greening came to the school a week prior to planting day for a fun, educational lesson about trees. They used Pokemon-style cards for a game where students had to determine the best trees for their school grounds based on specs listed on the cards.
