Upcoming LGBTQIA+ lesson for high schoolers, eighth graders and small group of seventh graders
An LGBTQIA+ History and Culture lesson will be provided to high schoolers the week of May 11, and to eighth graders and a select group of seventh graders the week of May 18.
Background: In June 2022, the School Board approved the LGBTQIA+ History and Culture Resolution. The lessons will be provided in May as in prior years. The resolution directed the district to incorporate curriculum that reflects the history and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Our schools continue to focus on maintaining safe and welcoming learning environments for all scholars. This lesson is designed to help students recognize the individuality and experiences of people within the wider community.
How it will work: Students will hear a 30-40-minute lesson in one of their advisory/foundation times the week of May 11 (high schoolers) or May 18 (middle schoolers). The skills, abilities and knowledge that scholars will attain include:
- Students will gain a deeper understanding of LGBTQIA+ histories and identities.
- Students will gain an understanding of the importance of using preferred pronouns and creating awareness of diverse identities.
Parents/caregivers of current high school or middle school scholars are, as always, welcome to review learning materials. Those interested in seeing these particular learning materials are asked to log into Schoology. Please refer to these directions on how to do this. Note, the lesson will be available to view April 8.
As with any lesson, parents/caregivers are welcome to choose an alternative learning activity for their scholar if desired. Anti-bullying and creating a brave space will be the focus of the alternative learning activity in this particular instance. Families wishing to proceed in this direction are asked to fill out the lesson opt out form.
