Winter sports roundup - March update
Maple Grove boys and girls basketball teams holding their fourth place trophies

A pair of Maple Grove Senior High (MGSH) appearances in the AAAA Minnesota State High School League state basketball tournament round out this winter's state tournament action for Osseo Area Schools.

Girls basketball

MGSH girls basketball played East Ridge in the quarterfinals round of the 2026 AAAA state tournament March 11, winning with a score of 65-53 and advancing to the semifinals round against top-ranked Hopkins March 12. The team fell to Hopkins 60-45 in the semifinal round and would go on to finish in fourth-place after falling to Rochester Mayo in the third-place game.

Boys basketball

The MGSH boys basketball team advanced to the semifinals round of the AAAA state tournament after defeating Alexandria in the quarterfinals March 24. The Crimson were defeated by Apple Valley 63-73 in the March 26 semifinal and moved on to the battle for third place against Tartan. Tartan overcame Maple Grove 92-85, and the Maple Grove boys finished the season with a fourth-place finish.  

 

Previously reported winter state tournament appearances: 

Several winter sports have wrapped up their 2025-26 seasons, with multiple district athletes competing in state tournament play during the month of February in dance, nordic ski, gymnastics, boys swim and dive, wrestling and adapted floor hockey.

Adapted floor hockey (cognitively impaired)

The Maple Grove Crimson team, made up of members from MGSH, OSH and Park Center Senior High, earned a place at the 2026 floor hockey state tournament. They lost to the South Suburban Jets in the quarterfinals round Feb. 27 at Bloomington Jefferson High School, then moved to the consolation bracket Feb. 28, where they faced off against Shakopee-Prior Lake, losing 5-8. 

Adapted floor hockey (physically impaired)

The Maple Grove Crimson team advanced to the championship round and earned a second place finish in the PI adapted floor hockey state tournament at Bloomington Jefferson High School Feb. 27 and 28. The team defeated Minneapolis 10-0 in the quarterfinals and the Rochester Raiders 12-0 before facing off against Brainerd in the championship game. 

Dance

MGSH’s jazz dance won third place in the AAA state meet on Feb. 13 at Target Center in Minneapolis. The team has appeared in the jazz state finals every year since 2002, medaling 21 of those 25 years. The team has secured eight first place finishes at state and nine runner up placements since 2004. 

Gymnastics

OSH junior Ella Hagelin finished 10th in the all-around at the state gymnastics meet Feb. 20-21 at Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Hagelin placed sixth on vault, sixth on balance beam, eighth on floor exercise and 27th place in uneven bars.

Nordic ski

Osseo Area Schools sent four skiers to the MSHSL state nordic ski competition Feb. 11-12 at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik:

  • Allison Woodbury and Olivia Aarseth placed 15th in the girls two person sprint team relay.
  • MGSH junior Lucas Capistrant placed 48th with a time of30:07.7 in the pursuit race, which includes the combined times from a 5-kilometer classic and 5-kilometer freestyle race. 
  • OSH senior Raleigh Rundquist placed 64th with a time of 31:02.2. 

Boys swim and dive

OSH senior Mason Krings competed in the state boys swim and dive event, which took place Feb. 26-28 at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Krings placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly.

In the diving competition, MGSH diver Timothy Ollie placed 27th. 

Boys wrestling 

One MGSH and two Park Center Senior High (PCSH) wrestlers advanced to the MSHSL state wrestling tournament Feb. 25-28: 

  • MGSH senior Connor Peterson took second place in the 139-pound weight class. 
  • PCSH senior Jacob Hansen advanced to the semifinals round in the 189-pound weight class, ultimately earning a sixth place finish.
  • PCSH junior Jachai King competed in the preliminary round of 215-pound weight class. 

Girls wrestling

  • OSH senior Piper Douglass placed third in the 136-pound weight class. 
  • MGSH sophomore Carol Stevenson placed sixth in the 155-pound weight class. 
  • The following athletes competed in the preliminary round of their respective weight classes:
    • MGSH senior Russo Capel
    • PCSH freshman Emma Helgeson 
    • MGSH senior Elizabeth Ofuasia 
    • PCSH senior Marisol Mosenja
