Open enrollment and in-district transfers

Osseo Area Schools offers families the flexibility to choose the best educational setting for their children through open enrollment and in-district transfers. Open enrollment allows students from outside our district boundaries to attend our schools, while in-district transfers provide current residents the opportunity to transfer their children to a different school within the district. To apply for open enrollment or an in-district transfer, please complete the application process outlined on our website. We encourage families to explore all the options available to find the school that best meets their child's needs.

Important Notice: Open enrollment and in-district transfer updates:

Fernbrook Elementary and Maple Grove Senior High are currently at capacity and not accepting open enrollment or in-district transfer applications at this time.
In-district transfers for all elementary and middle schools are paused until 2027 while new attendance boundaries are being implemented.
Students entering fifth or eighth-grade in fall of 2026 that will be impacted by the upcoming school boundary adjustment are able to request a transfer to stay at their current school if they so choose. A form for these requests will be available in late fall 2025.

You have many options in our district

Explore our magnet school options at Birch Grove School for the Arts, Weaver Lake: A Science, Math and Technology School and Zanewood Community: A STEAM School
To qualify for enrollment into Kindergarten your child must turn 5 on or by Sept. 1 of the school year desired. Children who turn age 5 between Sept. 2 and Nov. 1 of the school year desired are eligible to apply for Early Entrance to Kindergarten (this application deadline is April 15)

Schools Closed to In-District Transfer and Open Enrollment: Osseo Area Schools is not accepting open enrollment applications at Fernbrook Elementary due to capacity concerns. Additionally, in-district transfer is temporarily paused at the elementary and middle school levels until 2027 because of the attendance boundary change process. Exceptions are, however, being made for fall 2026 fifth and eighth graders if interested (a form will need to be filled out late fall 2025). This is all in accordance with school board procedure. A few things we need to when you apply

Once you have submitted the open enrollment application, the Enrollment Center staff will notify you if your child's application is approved. At that time, please complete the appropriate enrollment packet and submit it to the Enrollment Center along with required documents. Please do not submit an enrollment packet until you have been notified that your application was approved.

The following documents will need to be presented when you enroll your child:

Proofs of residency (one form)
Birth Certificate or Passport
Updated child’s required immunizations
